Quick answer

Tax filing support in Malaysia means the bookkeeping team completes your year-end closing and organises the full-year accounts, then a partner licensed tax agent computes the tax and submits Form C, Form B and CP204. For a company with a financial year end (FYE) of 31 December, the Form C deadline is 31 July of the following year, with an extra 1-month grace period for e-Filing. The tax agent's fee is quoted separately.

Key points
  • Form C must be submitted within 7 months after the financial year end, with an extra 1-month grace period for e-Filing.
  • Form B is due 30 June each year, with an e-Filing grace period to 15 July.
  • CP204 must be submitted 30 days before the new financial year starts, and paid in instalments by the 15th of each month.
  • SMEs pay 15% on the first RM150,000 of chargeable income, and 17% on the next RM450,000.
  • Monthly bookkeeping plans include year-end closing; tax computation and filing are quoted separately by a partner licensed tax agent.

In the last week of July, the accounting firm's phone is always busy

For a company with FYE 31 December, the Form C deadline is 31 July of the following year, plus one month of e-Filing grace. That sounds like plenty of time, but many owners only hand over their documents in June.

By then the accounting firm has dozens of companies in the queue. If your accounts have problems and need a few rounds of questions, the deadline creeps up.

How smoothly your tax filing goes depends largely on your books. When the books are in order, the tax agent receives tidy reports, and computation and submission are usually much faster.

What does the bookkeeping team do, and what does the tax agent do?

The bookkeeping team handles the accounts and year-end closing. Tax computation, tax adjustments and submission are handled by a partner licensed tax agent.

Bookkeeping team: full-year accounts

Checks that all twelve months are recorded and bank reconciliation is done, completes year-end closing, and prepares the trial balance and financial statements.

Bookkeeping team: tax pack

Prepares in advance the details tax agents usually ask for, such as the fixed asset list, directors' fees, rent, interest and donations.

Bookkeeping team: follow-up questions

When the tax agent or auditor has questions on the accounts, the bookkeeping team answers and adjusts directly, so you are not stuck passing messages.

Tax agent: tax computation

A licensed tax agent makes the tax adjustments and computes capital allowances and tax payable under the Income Tax Act 1967.

Tax agent: form submission

Form C, Form B, CP204 and CP204A are submitted by the tax agent through e-Filing.

You: approval and payment

Review the reports and tax payable, sign off, and pay the tax before the deadline.

What are the main tax deadlines in Malaysia?

Company Form C is due within 7 months after the financial year end, individual Form B on 30 June, and employer Form E on 31 March. The table below uses a 31 December financial year end as the example. Companies with an FYE in another month follow the same rules.

How much should you estimate for CP204?

Base it on your expected chargeable income for the year. If your CP204 estimate is too low and the year-end difference is too large, you may face a penalty, subject to LHDN rules. If it is too high, your cash sits with LHDN. You can revise it with CP204A in the 6th, 9th and 11th months, so companies with monthly management reports know where they stand when revising.

How much corporate tax does an SME pay?

For SMEs with paid-up capital of RM2.5 million or less and turnover of RM50 million or less, the first RM150,000 of chargeable income is taxed at 15%, the next RM450,000 at 17%, and anything above RM600,000 at 24%. The tax agent computes your actual tax using your company's figures.

Accounts and documents must be kept for at least 7 years (Section 82 of the Income Tax Act 1967; Section 245 of the Companies Act 2016).

Example scenario

Say you run a bakery in Kuching as an Enterprise (sole proprietorship or partnership), and you are also a shareholder in a separate Sdn Bhd. You personally file Form B, due 30 June. The Sdn Bhd files Form C, due 31 July if its FYE is December.

The two deadlines are only a month apart, but the records are completely separate. The safer approach is to keep both sets of books monthly, hand the Enterprise's full-year accounts to the tax agent in April, and deal with the company's accounts in June.

How does tax filing support work?

  1. One month before the financial year end

We check the full-year accounts, fill in missing documents, and remind you of decisions to make before year end, such as directors' fees and fixed assets.

  2. Year-end closing and reports

We complete the last month's reconciliation and year-end closing, and prepare the trial balance and financial statements. For companies that need an audit, these also go to the auditor.

  3. Hand over to the tax agent

The tax pack goes to a partner licensed tax agent, who gives you a quotation and carries out the tax computation.

  4. You approve the tax payable

The tax agent explains the computation, and submits it once you approve.

  5. Plan next year's CP204

CP204 instalments are arranged based on the new year's estimate, with a check in the 6th, 9th and 11th months on whether a revision is needed.

How much does tax filing support cost?

Monthly bookkeeping plans include year-end closing and handing organised accounts to your auditor or tax agent, with the Starter plan from RM280 a month. Tax computation and filing for Form C, Form B and CP204 are not included in the plan and are quoted separately by a partner licensed tax agent. Audit fees are also separate.

Note

The above is a starting price; the final price follows the quotation. Prices exclude service tax. If the service provider is SST-registered, 8% is added. See the pricing page for details.

Who is tax filing support for?

  • Owners who start hunting for documents only a month before the deadline every year
  • You have both an Enterprise and a Sdn Bhd, and the deadlines are easy to mix up
  • You want to use monthly reports to estimate CP204, rather than filling in a random figure
  • Your company qualifies for audit exemption but still needs unaudited financial statements for SSM and tax filing

If you are facing an LHDN audit, a tax appeal or complex cross-border tax arrangements, engage a licensed tax agent or tax lawyer directly. Ask an accountant to confirm your situation using your company's details.

If your books are not done yet, start with catch-up bookkeeping. To find out whether your company needs an audit, read can your company qualify for audit exemption. In the long run, the least hassle is monthly bookkeeping.
